Vanity Vandals Responsible For £2 Billion Worth Of Domestic Damage
- 4 million people have burnt, scalded and damaged furniture
- The average cost of accidental fire damage in 2004 was £6,500
- Over 7 million instances of 'vanity vandalism'* in the south of England
- 16-24 year olds most reckless
Hair straighteners or other heated beauty appliances might make us look good and feel better, but according to new research by Halifax Home Insurance these high-tech beauty appliances are causing a wave of 'vanity vandalism'*. According to the leading insurer, over 12.6 million** GB adults have damaged furniture and domestic surfaces in recent years, resulting in £1.9bn** worth of damage, a heavy cost for the nations vanity.
Over 5 million** have left a heated beauty appliance, such as hair straighteners or heated rollers, switched on whilst they were out, and 4 million** adults have burnt, scalded or set fire to domestic surfaces, carpets or curtains. According to Halifax Home Insurance the average claims for an accidental fire in 2004 were in the region of £6,500***.
Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager Halifax Home Insurance, said: "So many of us are now using beauty equipment that, not so long ago, was only ever used by the trained professional. A lot of these devices can be set to extremely high temperatures, and when left unattended or on flammable surfaces, they can soon become perilous potentially causing serious damage to individuals and their property."
Younger adults appear to be the worst offenders with 16-24 year olds involved in almost five and a half million cases, compared to those aged 25-34 who have suffered over four million**. The South has seen the highest rate of vanity vandalism (7,278,000 instances) which is over 70% higher than the total number of vanity damage caused in the Midlands (4,182,000).
Halifax Home Insurance warns homeowners to take care when using potentially dangerous equipment and to make sure that they have the correct cover before getting dolled up.
